Infographics, why we need then and how to make them great

Information graphics or infographics have been around for many years and are graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge intended to present complex information quickly.  They can improve cognition by utilizing graphics to enhance the human visual system’s ability to see patterns and trends.  Social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter have allowed for 1000's of infographics to be spread around the world.

 Infographics are effective because of their visual element. The three parts of all infographics are the visual, the content, and the knowledge.  50% of the human brain is dedicated to visual functions, and images are processed faster than text. The brain processes pictures all at once, but processes text in a linear fashion, meaning it takes much longer to obtain information from text.  It is estimated that 65% of the population are visual learners, so the visual nature of infographics caters to a large portion of the population.

Recently the proliferation of a number of easy-to-use, free tools have made the creation of infographics available to a large segment of the population.
